Grade 5 English Lessons

Students in Grade 5, who usually are 10 or 11, are moving toward teenage years and are sometimes referred to as 'tweens'. This time is a period during which young children leave behind the innocent dependance of early years, and prepare for the independent rebellion of their teenage years! In learning langauge and other subjects, children's approach to their lessons and independent work clearly varies.

At this stage, children who read often tend to move quickly through reading assignments. Many children without a reading routine forsake books entirely in favor of computer games or television. Teachers struggle to help students who do not often read develop an interest in books.

Pupils at this stage are presented with more complicated and advanced comprehension tasks. Often, teachers present more complexs types of inference and also require students to answer questions in their own language.

The writing skills of preteens differ greatly among them. Such differences primarily arise from the distinctive attitudes of individual learners. Students who are patient, keep good study routines, and like academic subjects usually write well. Many children who are hyperactive, spend a lot of time playing computer games and watching television, and who do not receive enough parental attention, commonly have problems with writing. A teacher's job becomes difficult when trying to engage preteens in writing activities.
