Let’s Walk!

For many of us, walking is a natural part of our day. Often, we don’t think of it as exercise. We walk around our homes, our schools and workplaces, the shops and to and from our cars. Walking is an easy form of exercise because it can be done almost anywhere. If you take the stairs instead of the lift or escalator, you will find that your stamina improves over time and your muscles will stay strong.

In fact, any physical activity is exercise, and doctors agree that exercise is a good thing. Indeed, if you walk three times a week for 30 minutes, you will feel your fitness improve, especially if you walk at a slightly faster speed than normal, as this will increase your heart rate. This has been proven scientifically, and there is plenty of anecdotal evidence too. Of course, if you can walk every day for 30 minutes or more, your body and mind will thank you. People who suffer from common psychological illnesses like depression are advised to do regular exercise, and the easiest exercise that they can find is walking.

For longer distance walking, it is important to wear comfortable shoes. Without these, you may get blisters and aching feet, which might stop you from completing your exercise. Sandals and high-heeled shoes are not at all appropriate for walking. So it is advisable to invest in a high-quality pair of walking shoes even if they are a bit expensive.

Many people find it useful to set a daily walking target, such as 8000 steps, to make sure they are doing enough. Nowadays, many people set their target number of steps as 10,000. Of course, it is impossible to count every step we take. So some people buy a step counter, which is a device that you wear on your wrist. It counts the steps you take and shows this information on a small digital screen. It’s a good way to monitor your walking. So it is advisable to save up some money to buy a step counter.

Choosing to walk short distances instead of driving, such as to the local shop and back, is another easy way to benefit from walking, as is joining a walking club if there’s one in your community. In fact, a walking club is an excellent idea because walking with people with whom you share common interests is enjoyable, and exercise should be enjoyable. If exercise becomes another chore to be completed, you will soon stop doing it. For the same reason, you can walk while listening to music. When you are listening to your favorite music, you are so engrossed in it that you don’t feel the strain of walking. Often you will find your steps being synchronized to the beat of the music that you are listening to!
