Sample Compositions for Grade 1

The following sample compositions can be used, with minor changes, for Grade 1 students.

Myself

My name is Hannah. I am 6 years old. I am tall and lean. I have thick, curly hair. I stay at Kuala Belait, which is a small town in Brunei Darussalam. I am studying at St. Michael’s school. My house is small, but very pretty. My hobbies are gardening and playing with my pet cat Coco. I have planted many flowering plants in my garden, and I water them every day. I have many friends. I play badminton with my friends every evening. I am not very good at badminton, but I am slowly improving. (96 words)

My pet

I have a pet cat. Her name is Coco. She is bright orange, with a white patch on her neck. She has a long, furry tail, and pale blue eyes. She loves to eat fish and drink milk. Coco loves to cuddle against me at night and sleep. She rubs against my face in the morning to wake me up. My father gave Coco to me as a present for my 5th birthday. At that time, she was very small. Now she is quite big and heavy to carry. I love Coco and I am sure she loves me too. (100 words)

My family

My family has five members. My parents, elder sister, younger brother and myself. My father’s name is William and my mother’s name is Mary. Both my father and mother are very loving and caring. My father works as a police officer. My mother is a doctor. My sister’s name is Alice. My younger brother’s name is John. My sister is in Grade 3 and my brother is in Kindergarten 2. All of us go to the same school. Every night, we have dinner together. Before going to bed, I say good night to my family, and give them all a kiss. I love my family very much. (107 words)

My best friend

My best friend’s name is Daisy. She is my classmate. She is the same age as me – 6 years. She is a tall and beautiful girl with light brown eyes. Daisy and I play together and study together. She comes to my house every Saturday to play badminton with me. When I am sad Daisy sits with me and comforts me. I do the same for her. Daisy is very caring and kind. Sometimes she helps me when I have problems with my studies. She also makes me laugh. I love her a lot. (94 words)

How I celebrate my birthday

My birthday is 10th of June. I invite all my friends and class teacher from school for my birthday. I also invite my grandparents and cousins. My mother bakes chocolate cake and decorates our living room with balloons. She also makes a lot of food. She always remembers to make mac and cheese because it is my favourite food. I get a lot of presents on that day. After I cut the cake, everyone sings happy birthday song and hugs me. After having the cake and food, I play with my cousins and friends. I enjoy my birthday a lot. (100 words)

My favourite toy

My favourite toy is a barbie doll. I have named her Angel. She is a very pretty doll, with blue eyes and red hair. She has many dresses. I like all her dresses, but my favourite is the blue dress. Angel looks very beautiful in the blue dress. Angel also has a bag and sunglasses. At night, Angel sleeps with me. When I take bath, I give her a bath too. It is very difficult to dry her long hair. I take Angel with me wherever I go. But I cannot take her to school because my school does not allow students to bring toys. I love Angel very much. (110 words)

What I want to be when I grow up

I want to be a teacher when I grow up. I like to be a teacher because a teacher knows a lot of things. Also, it will be great fun to be with young people all day. My mother is also a teacher, and she enjoys her job very much. As a teacher, I will be very kind to the children in my class. I will tell them stories of great people so that they can also be great one day. I will not be a strict teacher. I will listen to my students if they have problems. I will also help them with their studies. I will let them play games when they are free. I am sure I will enjoy my job as a teacher, just like my mother. (131 words)
