Conjunctions

We can join words, or groups of words, by using conjunctions (joining words). Here are some conjunctions that we use often.


if     for     but     while     unless     whether     when     as     because     and     since     though     although     until     till


Exercise 1:

Use a conjunction from the box above to complete each of the following sentences. You can use one conjunction more than once.

  • Carlos washed the dishes ……………………Michael dried them.
  • The weather was cold…………………………it was the middle of summer.
  • Let us sit under this tree ………………………..it gets cooler
  • Eric peeled the potatoes ………………………………..Shamara sliced the meat.
  • You need not come with us ……………………………………..you really want to.
  • The match was postponed ……………………………..of the heavy rain.
  • We looked everywhere for the watch …………………………..could not find it.
  • Sam did not know ……………………………………….to choose a jumper or a shirt for his birthday
  • I intend to visit England ………………………….I have finished my schooling.
  • I will not help you ……………………………….you continue to be lazy.
  • I will always be your friend ……………………..................you treat me shabbily sometimes.
  • Let us wait …………………… Shane finishes her work; we cannot leave for the park without her.
  • I have been waiting here for you …………………….. 8 am
  • Let us enjoy the fun ……………… it lasts.
  • The party was fun ……………….. uncle Jack, always the wet blanket, arrived.
  • I did not join the beach party ………………. I was not feeling well.
  • I am fond of apples …………….oranges.

One way of joining two short sentences together is to use a conjunction at the beginning of the sentence. For example,

We played netball. Julie threw ten goals.

When we played netball, Julie threw ten goals.

Exercise 2:

Join these sentences together by using the conjunction in the brackets at the beginning.

  • The alarm did not ring. Sally missed the train. (When)
    ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………
  • We get more rain. The crops will die. (unless)
    ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………
  • John was feeling well. He did not come to school. (Although)
    ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………
  • He did not try. I did not help him again. (since)

  • John played the piano. I played on the drums. (While)

Exercise 3:

Join the sentence in the box to the other sentences by using a conjunction. For example, The cat climbed the tree because it wanted to hide in the branches.

[ The cat climbed the tree. ]

  • I threw a stone at it.
    ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………
  • It also jumped on to the roof.
    ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………
  • I tried to stop it.
    ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………
  • It did not damage the garden.

  • Although John was feeling well, he did not come to school.
  • Since he did not try, I did not help him again.
  • While John played the piano, I played on the drums.

Exercise 3

  • I threw a stone at it, so the cat climbed the tree.
  • Not only did the cat climb the tree, but it also jumped on to the roof.
  • The cat climbed the tree even though I tried to stop it.
  • The cat climbed the tree, but it did not damage the garden.
