English Speaking and Listening are easier than ever before with these activities
Upper primary or grade 4 means children are mature enough to explore the English language independently and in a better way than ever before. This is a stage where children enter into a growing age and do not need the assistance of pictures and drawings to read and comprehend. English is a crucial subject and the career of a child depends largely on how they take English in their initial years. Given here are certain English speaking and listening activities for 4th graders that can help them excel in the subject and also lay a strong foundation in one of the most crucial subjects of the academics.
With the help of these activities learning to speak English will become a lot more fun and they would cultivate the habit of pronouncing and speaking correct English fluently and without hesitation. This is the stage where you can incorporate comprehension questions that are inferential in nature. Let us cover the activities sequentially.
English Listening and Speaking Worksheets:
Listening and speaking worksheets section enables a 4th grader to speak aloud when they are alone or in a group. This enables them to pronounce difficult words correctly and speak fluently in public without hesitation. The practice session includes listening to the comprehension carefully, marking out the difficult words of the text, pronounce them correctly and then coming up with their own questions.
The worksheet comprises of various practice sessions on:
- Comprehension and collaboration
- Presenting knowledge and ideas
Audio Listening Sessions:
Since the students in grade 4 are in a better position to grasp quickly as they have a better ability to understand the text they listen, audio learning sessions works the best. Instead of going through the plain text and drawing inferences from them, this practice session is meant for them to listen to the different accents of English, grasp the text and draw inferences from what they have listened. It develops their ability to speak English in just the right way.
This practice session includes:
- Listening of audio CDs
- Watching the correct phonics in different English accents.
Group Discussion on Different Topics:
Listening to English practice sessions is followed by Group Discussions. Grasping the correct pronunciation by triggering the hearing sense works well and has proven good results. However, the session must be followed by another sensible practice session where the 4th graders can be encouraged to speak out. The session should be monitored well by the mentors to have a quick view about how well they have learnt in their previous practice sessions. At this juncture, a special heed is to be paid to give them only those topics which interest them. Topics that they love to talk about with their peers and in which they are most comfortable because the purpose here is not to test the depth of their knowledge but to motivate them to speak out.
They are being monitored for any type of hassles or hitches that they may come across. Encouraging them to speak when they stop will build up their confidence which will in turn enable them to speak English correctly and fluently while they are in public. It is better not to interrupt them in between when they are talking among themselves because it will disrupt their entire thought process and they might go blank. The person monitoring them should note down their mistakes and discuss with them at the end. To note whether they have improved or not, they are monitored in the next discussion. In the GD, there will be certain students that would not speak at all. We should talk to those students and ask the problems that they may be facing and they should be motivated to speak out.
This is one of the most fruitful English-speaking activities that can give the right kick start to the 4th graders to speak fluent English without the fear of being incorrect or hitch of going blank at certain points.
