Chemical Reactions (Advanced)

Chemical reactions occur in situations where substances react with each other and produce another new substances. Balancing of chemical equations and understanding various types of reactions are basic chemistry skills. These concepts help explain how and why reactions take place and how to predict the outcomes of reactions.

โš–๏ธ Balancing Equations

Balanced equations follow the law of conservation of mass โ€“ the number of atoms for each element stays the same before and after the reaction.

Why balance equations? In a chemical reaction, atoms are simply rearranged โ€“ not created or destroyed. A balanced equation shows the same number of atoms on both sides.

๐Ÿ“Œ How to Balance Equations

  • 1๏ธโƒฃ Write the unbalanced equation.
  • 2๏ธโƒฃ Count atoms on both sides.
  • 3๏ธโƒฃ Adjust coefficients until both sides are equal.
Example:
Unbalanced: H2 + O2 โ†’ H2O
Balanced: 2H2 + O2 โ†’ 2H2O

๐Ÿ”ฌ Types of Chemical Reactions

There are five main types of chemical reactions. Recognizing the pattern helps you understand what products are formed.

โž• Synthesis (Combination)

Two or more substances combine to form a more complex substance.

A + B โ†’ AB

โž– Decomposition

A compound breaks down into simpler parts.

AB โ†’ A + B

๐Ÿ” Single Replacement

One element replaces another in a compound.

AB + C โ†’ AC + B

๐Ÿ”„ Double Replacement

Two compounds swap elements and form new compounds.

AB + CD โ†’ AD + CB

๐Ÿ”ฅ Combustion

A substance reacts with oxygen, releasing heat and light.

CH4 + O2 โ†’ CO2 + H2O
