Ways to Improve Reading Skills

How to encourage kids to read from an early age? This is one of the many difficulties every parent faces during the early years of their kids studies. In fact, a child’s early interest in reading develops into a great habit that continues throughout their lives to read and learn, which will make them masters of the world.

There are number ofways to improve reading skills. I here write some of the best ways that can part reading skill.

  • Ask your kids to Read Regularly
  • Practice Silent and Oral Reading
  • Provide different types of reading material (Poems, Stories etc.)
  • Sit with your kids, encourage them to read
  • Evaluate your kid

Reading short stories, poems, news paper, articles, children’s books with pictures like Readers Digest are some of the helpful ways to improve reading skills. To make your reading easier, first read the title of the passage or name of the story, then look at the picture given, get an idea about what you are going to read. Read, mark difficult words and check its meanings. If you don’t understand, reread the passage.

“Playful Poems that Build Reading Skills”. Poetry is magical to kids as well as young children because it can tell great stories using silly words that engage the child and helps them learn a greater variety of words, pronunciation and more than that Kids Love Rhyme and Music. So, utilize their love to sing and dance to improve reading skills.

Reading poems aloud will help improve several things;

  1. Children get used to reading aloud and get into the rhythm of the poetry which gives them great practice on reading and pronouncing words.
  2. New words are introduced with each poem and they learn new words
  3. Develop Reading Comprehension Skill
  4. Poetry makes kids think and gives new ideas

At initial stage, the reading should be mainly confined to alphabets, names and words. Show them pictures and ask. Then, introduce them with rhymes, poems and short stories. Use articles and news papers in the higher classes. Mastery of words and structure of sentence is the base of reading. Reading is closely connected with other language skills – listening, speaking and writing.
