Understanding Hormone Fluctuations During Pregnancy And Postpartum

Pregnancy and postpartum are transformative times for a woman’s body, and one of the most outstanding changes is hormonal shifting. Such changes can profoundly affect both physical and emotional well-being. Understanding them is necessary for effective management of the journey ahead. Being aware of such changes also helps women better prepare and cope with whatever comes with every stage.

Hormonal Changes During Pregnancy

Dramatic hormonal changes take place in the body during pregnancy to support both mother and fetus. One of the primary hormones is human chorionic gonadotropin, which assists in maintaining early pregnancy. Estrogen and progesterone increase, thereby having important roles in supporting pregnancy, aiding fetal development, and preparing the body for a labor.

These will start to exhibit physical symptoms such as fatigue, morning sickness, and mood swings. As the pregnancy advances, the body continues to change, with hormones working to have a smooth birth and healthy baby.

Postpartum Hormone Fluctuations

After giving birth, the hormone levels in the body begin shifting again, and it is a very challenging time for new mothers. Estrogen and progesterone levels plummet, which may precipitate mood swings, fatigue, as well as feelings of despair. This rapid change in hormonal level explains why most women experience “baby blues” within the first few weeks after birth.

However, the increase in prolactin produced by the body for breastfeeding can also play a role in mood and physical effects. These hormonal shifts can seem challenging while navigating postpartum, but they are only temporary and a natural part of recovery.

Navigating Hormonal Shifts

The hormonal fluctuations and change that take place during pregnancy and postpartum are natural but can be overwhelming at times. Information, self-care, and professional consultation are the main skills that can help them to cope with this stage of life. Other women may opt to become a surrogate, managing similar hormonal changes with support from health professionals for a safe and healthy experience.

With knowledge and understanding, the constant changes with the hormones during pregnancy and postpartum become a little easier to manage, so will your body’s transition into the next stage. You can recover and thrive in this pivotal time by embracing the support and resources that surround you. For more information, check out the following infographic.
