8 Things Every Child Needs to Maintain Good Mental Health

Mental health is just as important as physical health, but it’s often discussed in the same breath. The truth is that mental health plays a huge role in how we live our lives, and that’s especially true for children. We all know kids are joyous little beings, but keeping them happy is not always easy. School can be challenging, they grow up so fast, and they go through lots of changes at this time in their life. That being said, certain things can either positively or negatively affect a child’s mental state. Caring for your child is no easy feat, but by arming yourself with knowledge about the importance of good mental health, you are well on your way to helping them succeed and grow into an adult they can be proud of one day.

1.  Have a Support Network

You can do everything right as a parent, but you will inevitably run into some rough patches. It’s also likely that your child will go through some challenges, as well. At these times, it’s important to have a support network. Having people you can talk to when you need help can make all the difference. It could be a friend, a family member, a therapist, or even a support group. Having others to lean on when you need help can ease the stress of parenting and let you know you’re not alone. If you don’t have a support network, make it a priority to find one. It will make all the difference when things get tough.

2.  Build a Strong Communication Culture

Good mental health is built on open and honest communication. As kids grow, it’s important that they feel comfortable talking to their parents. Communication is so important for parent and child relationships! It can help you solve problems, avoid issues, and generally understand each other better. No matter your child’s age, it’s important for them to speak up about what they’re feeling and what’s on their mind. If you’re having a hard time getting your child to open up, remember that you have to make them feel safe enough to do so. Parent-child relationships should be built on communication and trust. If your child trusts you, they’re more likely to open up. If you build a strong communication culture, you are helping your child establish good mental health. A strong communication culture is very important in helping kids with anxiety.

3.  Encourage Exercise

Exercise is crucial to both physical and mental health. It helps regulate mood, reduce anxiety and improve confidence. Have you noticed that whenever someone is feeling down, they often take to lying down or sitting on the couch? This doesn’t promote good mental health. Exercising can be as simple as walking around the block or doing a few push-ups in the morning. It’s important for kids to get up and move around, even if it’s just a little bit. When you exercise, you send a message to your brain that all is well and that you are in control. Exercise also releases endorphins, which are chemicals that make you feel good. Whether it’s something as simple as walking or as complicated as playing a sport, exercise is crucial for good mental health.

4.  Celebrate Small Victories

Life can be difficult, but it can also be incredibly rewarding. One of the best ways to promote good mental health in your child is to celebrate their small victories. You don’t have to wait until they get into Harvard or get a promotion at work to celebrate. You could celebrate a great report card, a special moment with a friend, or even just finishing their homework. You don’t have to wait for something life-changing to happen. Your child is growing, learning, and going through life just like you are. The best way to foster good mental health in your child is to celebrate their victories, no matter how small they may seem.

5.  Teach Children Coping Mechanisms

As a parent, you should be aware of your child’s mental health and be able to spot when something isn’t right. Once you notice that something might be off, it’s important that you have a plan for how to deal with it. Kids deal with lots of feelings and thoughts that are normal. It’s important that they know how to manage and cope with those feelings. You don’t want them to bury their emotions and ignore what they’re going through. It’s important for them to open up and talk about what they’re feeling. Some good ways to help your child cope with negative thoughts and emotions are to use positive affirmations, meditate, or even journal. These are all great ways to help kids deal with what they’re going through and promote good mental health.

6.  Help Them Develop Good Habits

Your child is developing habits as they go through life, and many of them will stick with them for the rest of their lives. It’s important that they develop healthy habits early on, and one of the best ways to promote good mental health is to help them do so. Examples of good habits to encourage include eating healthy, exercising, reading, writing, and spending time with friends and family. It can seem daunting to help your child develop good habits, but it’s important that you do so. When your child grows up, having these healthy habits will help them lead a better life. It will also help them develop good mental health.

7.  Don’t Be a Stranger

It seems like every parent has a rule about not sitting on the couch, being too close to the TV or being too online. While these rules are in place to help your child have good mental health, they can also make your child feel like they can’t get close to you. There are so many ways you can connect with your child. You don’t have to be strict or a buzzkill. You can still spend time with them, be a friend and help them feel like you’re there for them. Spending time with your child and getting to know them on a deeper level will help them feel secure and loved. It will also help them develop good mental health.

8.  A Stable Minded Parent

Parenting is hard work. You must make sure you’re taking care of yourself so you can be there for your child when they need you most. Take time for yourself, exercise, and make sure you’re eating right. Maintaining good mental health is important so you can properly care for your child. You don’t want to burn out, and it’s important that you’re able to handle everything that goes with being a parent. Taking care of yourself is the best way to make sure you can properly care for your child. It will help them develop good mental health and make it easier for you to handle the day-to-day.

Many different factors can affect a child’s mental health. It’s important to help your child create an environment where they feel comfortable, loved, and safe. When you do this, you are helping them build mental strength and increasing their ability to cope with life’s challenges.
