Functions

Functions

Functions are an introduction to ideas where each input is connected to one output. A good understanding of functions helps with algebra, analyzing data and modeling reality. Thanks to this topic, students are better able to recognize trends, make forecasts and sort data properly.

Input/Output

Each input a student gives in a function should only be matched with one output value. They analyze how a function machine, tables and rules help to transform inputs into outputs. Learning this provides a base for more complex concepts and supports you when solving different types of problems. Learning becomes enjoyable with the use of visual and interactive material.

Linear Functions

Linear functions are studied by learners, where the output moves at the same rate with the input. They are involved in writing and analyzing linear functions in different forms. Having knowledge of linear functions is important for learning algebra, economics and science. The students analyze activities such as walking, growing or spending money.

Tables

They use tables to set up the values given as input and as output, as well as find the rules of each function. Tables allow them to notice patterns and follow the steps that each function takes. Thanks to this skill, drawing graphs and writing equations can help describe challenging concepts in a more practical way. They allow learners to practice using bigger data sets.

Activity Idea

Function Factory - Use simple rules (e.g., x + 3) to create input/output tables and graphs.

Entertainment Activities

1. Number Machine Game - Pretend a "machine" transforms numbers; guess the rule.

2. Create a Code - Make your own function rule and challenge someone to solve it.

3. Graph Match - Match function rules with their graphs or tables.
