Geometry: Area & Volume

This course develops students’ knowledge of calculating the amount of space in different figures, both in two dimensions and three dimensions. It is important for improving spatial awareness, solving problems and improving basic math skills. They work on breaking down hard-to-draw shapes, applying formulas and computing the areas and volumes correctly.

Circles

They investigate the important features of a circle such as radius, diameter and circumference. They apply the formulas of π × radius² for the area and π × diameter for the circumference. Understanding circles plays a role in geometry, science and also helps in designing things with a circular shape. Some actual-world examples are wheels, clocks and round tables.

3D Shapes

Staff and students work on finding and studying cubes, cylinders, cones and spheres. They learn the ways to calculate the surface area and volume of a 3D object. Trying to make sense of how 3D figures are built encourages using spatial logic and supports engineering and design thinking. Activities such as constructing models or testing them fit the concept of measurement.

Composite Figures

Students use known numbers to represent smaller unsure numbers that are needed to calculate the total measurement. To measure irregular shapes, they apply adding or subtracting parts of rectangles, triangles, circles and other shapes. This process is important for fixing problems we come across in the world like flooring, painting rooms or constructing various things. It improves students’ ability to analyze problems and feel sure about their geometry knowledge.

Activity Idea

Shape Detective Notebook - Sketch real-life objects that match 3D or composite shapes.

Entertainment Activities

1. String Circles - Use string and rulers to explore radius, diameter, and circumference.

2. Build It Challenge - Use cardboard or clay to build composite figures.

3. Shape Hunt - Find circular and 3D items around the home.
