Statistics

๐Ÿ“Š Statistics

Statistics helps students gather data, study it and draw conclusions to support their decisions. Critical thinking and literacy skills developed from this topic are useful in math, science and solving real-life problems. Learning how to use graphs and charts allows students to understand numbers clearly.

Box Plots

Students are taught to use and read box plots to quickly summarize data using its median and quartiles. It can show where the main spread, the center and the outliers are in the data set. They help you notice the different ranges within and between various groups. Many researchers use them when analyzing data or performing experiments.

Histograms

People use histograms to map out the frequency with which data points are spaced out in intervals. They can use the height of the bars to spot changes in trends. They are helpful for reviewing big data sets and observing their value distribution. People rely on this skill in both schools and in everyday life.

Mean/Median

To describe what is in the middle of the data, students find the mean and median. They assist in organizing data to help with comparison. Using mean and median provides a fair way to decide and to conduct analysis. Examples from life include data from school tests, sports tournaments and accounts.

Activity Idea

Data Collection Survey - Ask family or friends a question and chart the results.

Entertainment Activities

1. Dice Roll Histogram - Roll dice many times and record results in a histogram.

2. Box Plot with Shoe Sizes - Use real data like family shoe sizes to create a box plot.

3. Snack Sorting Stats - Count and graph candy colors or types in a pack.
