Area Surface Area and Volume

Area Surface Area and Volume

Through this book, students learn how to estimate space inside and outside of shapes. Studying this topic sharpens a person’s spatial awareness and equips them for tasks such as packing and designing. It also teaches students about advanced geometry concepts using paper and pencil methods.

Prisms

They are taught to find both the surface area and volume for rectangular and triangular types of prisms. When finding volume, they use the base area multiplied by the height and surface area is calculated using all the face area dimensions. Prisms help you understand 3D geometry better and can be used to find out storage space in real-life examples. Making and looking at models of prisms aids in understanding their properties.

Nets

Young mathematicians explore how we can unfold 3D shapes into plans called nets. They catch faces using nets, determine the size of surfaces and see the construction of solid objects. Learning with nets aids students by making abstractions in geometry more practical. You can also use this program for hands-on activities involving drawing, folding and building.

Activity Idea

Build-a-Net Challenge - Cut out and fold paper nets into 3D shapes.

Entertainment Activities

1. Box Dissection - Unfold small boxes (like cereal or tea boxes) to see the net.

2. Draw Your Own Nets - Sketch nets for cubes, rectangular prisms, triangular prisms.

3. Volume and Surface Area Hunt - Measure real objects and calculate their surface area and volume.
