Geometry: Circles and Trigonometry

Geometry: We will focus on circles and study trigonometry as well. This book mixes the charm of circles with the usefulness of trigonometry. Through this topic, students observe how angles, arcs and sides in triangles relate to one another by using trigonometric functions. These ideas are important for using in applications such as architecture, astronomy, physics and engineering.

Arcs

Students are taught how to detect and assess how much of a circle’s circumference is contained within an arc. They look into major and minor arcs, how long an arc is and the links between arcs and central angles. In calculating distances and designing paths or circles, arcs are one of the most important things to understand.

Angles

Students study the main angles of circles that are labeled, as well as those that are not. Angles are used by mathematicians to solve several geometric issues and to study the properties of circles. To do geometric proofs, you need to be able to think logically and confidently with these skills.

Sine/Cosine

Angles are connected to the sides of right triangles using sine and cosine as trigonometric functions taught to students. They use these ratios to address problems requiring height measurement, distances and even angles. Good knowledge of sine and cosine gives students an edge in advanced math and problem-solving in physics and engineering.

Activity Idea

Circle Explorer - Measure arcs and angles on paper plates and use sine/cosine to find side lengths of triangles.

Entertainment Activities

1. Angle Measurement - Use a protractor to measure and compare angles.

2. Sine/Cosine Model - Build right triangles using rulers and string.

3. Arc Length Estimation - Calculate arc lengths on circular objects around the home.
