What Does Your Heart Do?

Your heart is about the size of your fist, and it’s one of the hardest-working muscles in your whole body! It sits in the middle of your chest, slightly to the left, and it beats about 100,000 times every single day. That’s a lot of work!

Think of your heart like a super-powered pump. Its job is to push blood all around your body, or from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. This blood carries essential substances your body needs, such as oxygen (to help you breathe and have energy) and nutrients (from the food you eat).

How Does the Heart Work?

Your heart has four special rooms called chambers—two on top (called atria) and two on the bottom (called ventricles). It also has four doors, called valves, that only open one way, much like the turnstiles at a theme park.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Blood comes in: Blood that’s been traveling around your body comes back to your heart. It’s tired and needs fresh oxygen!
  2. To the lungs: Your heart pumps this tired blood to your lungs, where it picks up fresh oxygen (from the air you breathe) and releases carbon dioxide (which you exhale).
  3. Back to the heart: The newly refreshed blood returns to your heart, now bright red and full of oxygen.
  4. Out to the body: Your heart gives one big squeeze and pushes this oxygen-rich blood out through tubes called arteries. The blood travels everywhere—to your brain so you can think, to your muscles so you can play, and to every part of your body!

Then the entire cycle begins again. Your heart does this over and over, every second of every day, even when you’re sleeping!

Why Is Heart Health Important?

Taking care of your heart means it can continue to do its important job for your whole life. Here’s why a healthy heart matters:

  • More Energy: A strong heart pumps blood better, which means more oxygen gets to your muscles and brain. This gives you energy to run, play, learn, and have fun!
  • Fighting Germs: Your blood carries special cells that fight off germs and help you heal when you get hurt. A healthy heart delivers these helper cells wherever they’re needed.
  • Living Longer: People who take care of their hearts can remain active and healthy as they age. You want your heart to keep working great for 100 years or more!

How Can You Keep Your Heart Healthy?

The good news is that keeping your heart healthy is fun! Here are some easy ways:

  • Play and Exercise: Run, jump, swim, dance, ride your bike—anything that gets you moving! When you exercise, your heart gets stronger, just like your leg muscles get stronger when you run.
  • Eat Healthy Foods: Your heart loves fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. These foods give your heart the fuel it needs. Try to limit sugary snacks and foods high in fat.
  • Get Enough Sleep: Your heart needs rest, too! When you sleep, your heart can slow down and relax a little bit.
  • Manage Stress: When you’re worried or upset, your heart has to work harder. Take deep breaths, talk to someone you trust, and engage in activities that bring you happiness.
  • Don’t Smoke (when you’re older): Smoking is terrible for your heart. Never start!

Your heart is a fantastic organ that works hard to keep you healthy every single day. By taking care of it now, you’re helping it stay strong for the rest of your life. So get out there, play, eat well, and give your heart the love it deserves!
