We all want the best for our children. In fact, we strive for each generation to be more successful than the last. There are loads of different ways that you can prepare your children for what the future has to bring them, but here’s our tips to make sure that life is happy and successful.
Although this seems a little controversial, it’s important to consider the environment your children are growing up in. Take your local area – is there a good school nearby, is there plenty of access to green spaces, and are there good public transport links with good access to amenities like shops and gyms? If the property value is still low then it’s a target for people to move in and make the area better, so the property prices will increase over time, meaning that if you buy a cheap house now and maintain it well, when your kids are older and you have time to move on, you’ve got a worthwhile investment to sell. It also acts as insurance in case the worst should happen and your children need a quick injection of cash.
Insurance is a must if you have a family, even if you live in a country with universal healthcare. It can be cheaper than a credit card minimum payment and would mean that should anything tragic happen then you at least have the cost of a funeral prepared for those you leave behind in advance. Now there are guides available where you can review the benefits of long-term care insurance, but if we are lucky in this world we get to bury our parents before they bury us and making sure that our kids have the cash to make the arrangements is definitely an investment in their future.
This is more of a common-sense thing, but if you grow up doing chores in exchange for an allowance or helping out around the house, generally it means that when they go away to camp or college, they will already have the knowledge and skills. This means you won’t have to deal with the thirty calls of “how does the washing machine work”. In fact, helping them helps you in the long-run.
It also teaches them the value of the hustle and working for the dollar to ensure that they are never left out in the cold financially, even when times get tough. Instill some pride in their work, like showing it off to your friends on social media the way our parents showed off the mugs and picture frames we made them growing up, and not only will they get the positive reinforcement – as well as the money you are obviously bribing them with to do a job you really don’t want to do (especially if you have teens) – but they will also get a positive reputation. Getting your child to help around the home might seem trivial but this will all help to create a well-rounded individual that is ready to take on the world.
