Top Safety Lessons To Teach To Your Kids

Safety is a priority and top concern for any parent. It’s also the source of constant worry, something that doesn’t go away, no matter what age your kids are.

It’s important to teach your kids the importance of safety so that they can continue to grow up with a safety-led attitude. There are a lot of dangers in the world that we as adults tend to forget even exist.

However, for young kids especially, it’s easy to fall into dangerous situations if they’ve not been taught about them. With that being said, here are some top safety lessons to teach to your kids this year if you haven’t already. These safety tips could be the difference between your child being safe and being in serious danger.

It’s natural for many kids to have an interest in the kitchen. After all, they see their parents spending every day in it, prepping food on the counter for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

It’s also a skill that you want to be proactive in teaching your children about because it’s going to be needed as they get older. Unfortunately, there are some who don’t get encouraged to cook or bake from a young age and as they get older, they end up knowing nothing about it.

As a result, they might not be able to grill cheese or cook pasta. As a basic life skill, it’s something that they should certainly be learning at home and from a young age.

However, many parents avoid it because of the dangers it presents. With that being said, it’s worth introducing your kids to the kitchen when they’re interested or old enough. From here, you can teach them all about the dangerous equipment that you find in your kitchen.

Make sure you’re observing them when they’re baking or cooking themselves and reinforce the dangers that are present so that your children are well aware of them.

Avoiding the chemicals cupboard

Chemicals are a part of the home for the most part, mainly in the form of cleaning products. We’re told as parents to move any chemicals up and out of reach when we have children. However, while it’s all well and good locking them away from it, it’s important to help ensure they know how dangerous these chemicals are.

When you tell a child not to do something, especially those who are too young to understand the difference between yes and no, they’ll want to defy their parents and do it anyway.

With that being said, tell them all about the chemicals cupboard and why it’s out of bounds. It’s good for them to know what makes them dangerous, rather than for them to be inquisitive about what they are.

Of course, it’s still useful to keep this cupboard locked and out of sight. However, making sure they know it exists and to avoid them stumbling on it at some point, is worthwhile.

Educate them on the dangers of water

Water is dangerous, whatever volume of water is exposed to your children. From bathtimes to going to your local swimming pool, it’s important that your children know the risks of water.

For example, when it comes to bathtime, you should never leave your children unoccupied. With a local swimming pool or beach, you should be teaching your children that if they cannot yet swim, they should be going into these bodies of water with inflatable armbands and other inflatables that keep them above the surface.

There’s also the danger of going onto frozen lakes or ponds. There have been examples in the past where sadly both children and adults have died from going on these seemingly solid surfaces but falling in and succumbing to the cold.

Safety on the road

Looking both ways is something to be very mindful of when crossing the road and a lesson to be passed down to your children. While it might be many years, you should be encouraging a calm attitude when it comes to driving in the car.

After all, you don’t want them to be faced with a motorcycle accident lawyer when they get older due to them getting disgruntled by other drivers on the road or because they were not visible on the road because they did not have a custom look on a Suzuki ATV which made them more visible. How you behave, has an influence on how they behave too.

With that being said, make sure you’re teaching them that safety on the road is important, regardless of whether they’re the ones driving, in the passenger seat, or as a pedestrian.

Teach them not to mess with plug sockets

Electrics are something that isn’t to be messed with, yet many young kids have a fascination with outlets. With that being said, you don’t want to be encouraging any behavior where they’re trying to poke their fingers in the outlet with wet or sticky hands.

Try to stress the dangers of plug sockets and avoid them at all costs. While putting covers over them might help, you’re also dismissing the opportunity to teach them about the dangers.

Don’t talk to strangers online or offline

Stranger danger – it’s something you’re taught as a child and it’s something to communicate actively to your children. Unfortunately, there are people out there who can’t be trusted, especially around children. With that being said, it’s important that you educate your children on talking to strangers online or offline.

While some might be totally fine, you want them to be able to identify those moments of danger that you want them to avoid at all costs.

Knowing when someone is taking advantage of them

With the above being said, there are also people out there who might take advantage of your child while they’re young or as they get older. Helping them recognize when that’s happening, is going to help you to keep an eye on anyone who might be using your child for harm. While it can involve tough topics of conversation, it’s conversations worth having.

These safety lessons are all a great way to help teach your kids about the dangers in the world and how to avoid them.
