Guide to Planning a Harry Potter London Vacation

Who doesn’t love the boy who lived under the stairs? The iconic story by JK Rowling has generations obsessed with magic and wizardry. If you or someone you love is also a Potterhead, it’s time to go for a Harry Potter walking tour!

But wait a minute, we all know that an amazing trip requires amazing planning. So, how do you plan for this magical Harry Potter London vacation? Which places should you visit first, and how much budget should you have? Don’t worry because all of these questions are addressed in this guide. We will discuss everything to make your trip into the world of Mr. Potter as epic as his story. Read on!

How to Prepare for the Trip?

First of all, you should go ahead and book your flight tickets to London. They are certainly not available at the last minute – even if you find some, they will be really expensive. So, it’s best to book them at least a month ahead of your trip.

Next, browse your accommodation options. You can stay at an Airbnb, a local hotel, or a magic-themed hotel like Georgian House Hotel. It has a full Hogwarts-inspired interior with four post bunk beds and spellbooks.

Once your tickets and accommodations are settled, you will want to make bookings for anything that requires reservations. This may include tickets for Harry Potter and The Cursed Child play at the Palace Theatre (more on this later!).

Now, take out your suitcases and pack everything from the trip. We highly recommend looking up London’s current weather forecast and keeping clothing accordingly. It’s usually rainy and chilly, so make sure to have jackets and body warmers. You may also want to spend some time at the salon and pamper yourself for the trip.

Budgeting

An estimated total for this trip will be $1200 to $1500 per person. This may increase or decrease depending on exactly how you plan the trip, which places you choose, and where you cut down the costs.

To make it budget-friendly, we highly recommend pre-booking everything to get the cheapest rates. You may also want to take more people with you (at least 2 to 3 people) so that group activities like the Harry Potter Taxi Tour don’t cost you much as a solo traveler.

6 Things to See at the Harry Potter London Vacation

London is full of all things from Harry Potter. But when going on a vacation trip, you certainly can’t see the whole of London (or can you?). Here are the top 6 things we picked for you to have the best Harry Potter London vacation:

1.  Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Play

You must have already seen this 8th Harry Potter installment set 19 years later. It’s about Harry’s middle child and his purpose. However, when you see this two-part play at the Palace Theatre in London, the experience is out of the world. Plus, it will refresh all your Harry Potter memories and help you connect to the trip much better.

Cost: £15 per part

2.  Warner Brothers Studio Tour

This studio will form the bulk of your trip. It’s an actual place where most of the Harry Potter movies were filmed. So, you will see all the sets, costumes, props, and everything else. It will be like being part of the Harry Potter world!

When at this place, don’t forget to check out Hagrid’s Hut, The Great Hall, Dumbledore’s Office, Gryffindor Common Room, and the Diagon Alley. You will also be able to have an interactive experience at the Forbidden Forest and Hogwarts Express train.

Cost: From £53.50

3.  Platform 9 ¾

The King’s Cross Station became so famous after the Harry Potter movies that they created a platform 9 ¾. It is located right between platforms 9 and 10. There is also a trolley with suitcases halfway inside the wall. You can take photos with this iconic setup and make some wonderful memories. There is also a Harry Potter shop and family-friendly eateries to visit nearby.

Cost: Free (No Ticket Required)

4.  The Cauldron

Once you’re done with all the walking and touring, stop by The Cauldron located at 5d Stoke Newington Rd, London. This Harry Potter-themed venue offers an immersive potion-making class. You can create magical drinks with Potterheads and drink them, too!

Cost: £30 to £40

5.  St.Paul’s Cathedral

Remember the stunning Divination Staircase at Hogwarts? Well, it’s a real-life place present at St.Paul’s Cathedral in London. This place was also used for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

Cost: Free

6.  Harry Potter Muggles Tour or Taxi Tour

Lastly, before you leave the world of Harry Potter, you may want to take the Muggles tour. A professional will walk you through the most popular and memorable places linked to Harry Potter. You will also discover the best parts of London and learn about the city’s history. If you’re a larger group, you may consider a Taxi Tour where the taxi will take you through all these places.
