7 Essential Car Safety Tips for Children

As a parent, keeping your children safe should always be a top priority. This is especially true when it comes to transporting them in the car. While driving is an essential part of modern life, it does come with risks. Following some key car safety tips can help minimise these risks and ensure your children stay protected on the road.

1. Purchase a Quality Car

One of the best things you can do is ensure you have a high-quality, well-maintained vehicle. This gives you the peace of mind that it’s less likely to break down or be faulty. When shopping for used cars in Wakefield or other areas, take the time to inspect the car thoroughly. Look for signs of accidents, rust, or other damage. Test drive it to check for any issues with handling or noises. Ask to see a full service history and check recalls have been addressed. A reputable dealer can provide all this.

2. Regular Maintenance

Don’t forget regular checks and servicing. Things like tyre pressure, fluid levels and brake function are vital for safety. Take your car to a reputable garage if you spot any issues or strange noises. A well-maintained vehicle with good visibility will be much safer for driving with children.

3. Choosing the Right Car Seat

Getting the proper car seat is crucial. Check that it meets UK safety standards, is correctly fitted, and is suitable for your child’s age/size. Rear-facing seats give the best support for infants. Forward-facing seats can be used once they’re over 15 months old. Booster seats are needed until your child is tall enough for just a seat belt. Always read the manual and double-check the fitting.

4. Securing Your Child in the Seat

Simply having a car seat isn’t enough – you need to make sure your child is securely strapped in. Check the harness is tight with no twists or slack. The chest clip should be at the armpit level. Remove bulky clothing to get a proper fit. Always do a final check before setting off.

5. Safety in the Rear Seats

Children under twelve are safest in the back seat, away from any airbags. Use rear-facing seats in the middle if possible. Make sure to disable the front passenger airbag if you need a child in the front. Teach them not to lean forward or put their feet up on the dash. Secure any loose items that could strike them in a crash.

6.     Avoiding Distractions

Driver distraction is a major risk with children in the car. Stay focused – don’t turn around to tend to them while driving. Pull over safely if they need attention. Make sure they’re comfortable before setting off to limit noise and disruption. Provide games, snacks, and entertainment for long journeys. Stay patient, and don’t let their behaviour affect your driving.

7. Leading By Example

Children will copy your behaviour, so lead by example. Always wear your seat belt and insist everyone in the car does the same. Drive calmly and carefully, obeying speed limits. Don’t use your phone at the wheel – not even hands-free. Get into good habits, and your children will follow them.

Making sure your children are properly secured and protected on car journeys is a key responsibility. Following these tips on buying quality cars, child seats, distractions, and regular maintenance will give you great peace of mind.
