Understanding the Behavioral Disorders in Children

Behavioral problems in children are very common. A kid behaving oddly is a part and parcel of life. However, proper care is essential to raise a well-mannered kid. It is essential for the parents to know about the different types of behavioral problems caused by different factors. Knowledge about the triggering factor would be extremely helpful in rectifying the issues early. Here is a brief outlook on different behavioral problems in kids seen widely.

Types of behavioral issues

Broadly, the behavior issues of a child are classified into five types of disorders

  • Habitual disorder
  • Psycho-social disorder
  • Sleeping disorder
  • Anxiety disorder and
  • Disruptive disorder

The different types of behavioral disorders is caused and triggered by many factors, such as style of parenting, negligence, overpowering and over protecting the child, chronic illness, marital problems, fighting before children, etc. A problem in terms of behavior in a child is an outcome of multi-factors. The way they express their emotions or behave badly is generally a combination of age, development, mindset of the child, family, stress, etc. Children are not the immediate reactors. When your child behaves oddly, remember that it is an outcome of any incident happened in the past. The accumulation of unwanted events triggers the child and let them emerge with a bad behavior.

Possible causes that triggers behavioral disorders

Not allowing them to express their true feeling is also a triggering factor of behavioral disorder. For instance, putting pressure on kids and forcing them to join a class which they don’t like or forcing a child to support another kid who they don’t like, etc. Lack of precautionary information causes sudden change in the atmosphere, which dramatically affect the children. For example, separation, surgery, etc. The stressful circumstances affect the physical functions of the children like poor eating, sleeping too much or too little, staying lazy, not showing any interest, etc.

School stress should not be missed. Toddlers tend to behave errantly in the initial days of joining school. An unpleasant event in school is more than enough to alter the behavior of a child. Fear over certain things is also an outcome of an unpleasant or horrible incident, causing disorders in their behavior.

Differentiating the abnormality in abnormal behavior

It is a bit hard to differentiate the behavior problems which are normal and abnormal. Abnormal issues are generally backed by continuous issues faced by the children. A detailed intervention and discussion with the kid, frequency of the abnormality, depth of the bad behavior, extent of impairment in terms of physical and psychological health, etc would be helpful in identifying the cause of the behavioral disorder.
