How Irregular Sleep Routine Impact the Kids and Ways to Overcome it

Cry, eat and sleep! The life of a new-born revolves around these primary elements. Quality sleep is a critical element for overall development in kids, physically and psychologically.

Nobody can simply ignore the importance of the sleep that is more important for the little ones. The body heals and repairs itself during the sleep. Sleep deprivation in kids leads to lethargy, poor concentration, inability to recognize or recall, poor memory, less productivity, etc. Developing a good sleep habit improves the physical and mental efficiency.

A recent research about sleep routine and its impact on children revealed some fascinating and alarming facts!

Kids with irregular sleeping routines tend to have poor cognitive development. The research was conducted amongst kids aged 3 years, 5 years and 7 years.

The poor sleep habit is more likely to affect the functions of brain and delays the brain development too. Children with proper sleep routine and regularity scored high than those with improper sleep routine.

In addition, boys were affected intensely than girls. Boys lack in performance when compared with the girls with poor sleep routines in reading and writing.

Adverse effects of improper sleep habit in kids:

In general, when we miss a night’s sleep, it takes a minimum of 14 days for our body to repair ourselves to compensate the loss of sleep. It applies to the kids. Besides tiredness or lack of energy caused because of poor sleep habit, it impacts the immunity in kids that may lead to mood disorder. Additionally, kids are also affected by:

  • Emotional imbalance
  • Inability to solve problems
  • Hyperactivity
  • Behavioral issues
  • Depression etc .

The concept is simple! Kids who go to bed at different times wake up at different times. You cannot expect your child to wake up at around 6 am every day if your child sleeps at 11.30 pm. This irregularity causes imbalance in the body it affects the mechanism and normal functions.

How to develop good sleep routine?

If you want to develop a healthy sleep routine, you should regularize all other activities of your kid. For instance, regulation of bath time, dining, play time, study time, etc will regularize the sleep routine too! A proper discipline is essential to regulate the sleep time.

Tips to follow healthy sleep routine!

  • Create a pleasant mood to get the child to bed.
  • Ensure that the bed room is dark enough to induce the sleep. Avoid night lamps or any shades of light in blue.
  • Read them fairy tales and stories to get them sleep.
  • Play melodious music
  • Avoid too much activity before the bed time

Most importantly, make sure that you don’t allow your child to stay up at night for hours even in holidays.

How long the kids sleep is not a matter of concern, where the regularity of the sleep is important. Behavior and performance at school is influenced by following the regular sleep routine. Getting your child to bed on right time is a big chore, but with some extra effort, it is definitely possible.

Establish the sleep routine and keep the developmental issues at bay!
