Gardening Ideas for Kids

From the very beginning of life onwards children start exploring the world with all their senses. Children are curious and like to learn by doing things and also love to play in the dirt. Giving a garden of one’s own and allowing your children to nurture it, is one of the best ways how a child can experience the satisfaction that comes from caring for something. It will give them a chance to learn an important life skill. Parents and teachers can make your kids to try the craft of gardening at home as well as at school.

If you want to get your kids outside to enjoy all that nature has to offer, find these fun-filled gardening ideas for kids on how to growing their own vegetables, herbs and flowers and learning about the great cycle of life on earth.

Some tips to keep your children happy and helping them to learn gardening:

As there is no right time for children to start gardening, creating an interest among them is the important thing.  Give them a chance to come along with you and being a part in your gardening. They will naturally want to be with you outside and will join with you in your activities. Adding weeds to the compost, digging, helping to push the wheelbarrow, watering the crops will be even more exciting to them if they are provided with their own sized tools.

For making gardening more interesting, provide them a space of their own which will give a sense of ownership as they need a safe place to play and also to grow flowers and vegetables of their own. A small garden will be more manageable for you too. Do not expect them to work for long time without your direct interaction, expect some damage and know that they will get muddy and wet! Their interest to help you growing a beautiful is more important than whether they are doing things correctly. Their technique will improve slowly and the pleasure and interest will be its reward. Some children enjoy playing with trucks or cups in the soil, pulling them things they find around the garden etc. Allow them to do what they like.

You can also involve young children by applying their senses of smell, taste, sight, sound and touch. Encourage them to see, rub in their fingers and smell all varieties flowers and make them feel the taste of fresh vegetables and fruits from the garden. To keep them more excited and interesting, grow plants with playful appeal with flavors and fragrance. Choose big sized seeds which will be easy for small hands to press into the soil. Beginning gardeners won’t have much patience to wait long until harvest, so select plants that grows quickly. For safety’s sake, it’s better to grow plants with non-poisonous in nature and make sure whenever your children are with you in the garden, things like fertilizers, pesticides or manure are not within the reach, because it’s all too easy for them to get into an unsafe situation very quickly. Be sure to supervise closely which is also a part of the fun.

In the garden, your child will hear the birds singing and the buzz of bees and different kind of insects too. Let them listen to those sounds and make them feel the nature around them and encourage them to experience different textures outdoors as they reach out to feel what they see. However, be careful with the insects you do not know if ever they will bite you, it can cause allergies. Gardening with small children requires a different type of energy and only if you are relaxed and happy in the garden it will become a positive learning environment for your kids to growing garden.
