Relative Pronouns

What is a Relative Pronoun?

A relative pronoun is a pronoun that is used to refer to nouns, modify them or say something more about them. The relative pronouns that are commonly used in English are Who, Whom, That, Which, Whoever, Whomever, whose, and Whichever.

You can see the relative pronouns in the following sentences.

The house that Harry built is large. (The relative pronoun that refers to ‘the house’ and say something more about it (it is large).

The professor, whom I respect greatly, recently retired from the university. (The relative pronoun whom refers to the professor, and connects it to the rest of the sentence.)
